CPD for Social Workers

 

This summary outlines CPD activities that allows Social Worker members of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) to meet their CPD requirements.
 

CPD Cycle

The CPD Cycle runs annually.
 

CPD Goals

CPD Requirements vary depending on the CPD Goal undertaken. Use the information below to work out the most appropriate CPD goal:

1. All members (excluding current AMHSW and students) can choose to complete the ‘Accredited Member CPD Goal’.

2. All members (excluding current AMHSW and students) can choose to complete the ‘Advanced Accredited Member CPD Goal’. This CPD goal is a requirement for members who wish to apply for AMHSW & ACSW in the following membership year.

3. Only accredited Mental Health Social Workers (AMHSW) members only can choose to complete the ‘Accredited Mental Health Social Worker CPD Goal’. This CPD goal is a requirement for members who wish to renew their AMHSW status for the following year.
 

CPD Requirements

All members are required to develop a CPD Plan and engage in Supervision:

• A CPD plan ensures that members reflect on their CPD needs and develop a plan suitable to their CPD needs.
• All members are required to engage in supervision with a Social Worker. Direct supervision with a Social Worker is preferred. Supervision can be accessed through a range of means including face-to-face, online, telephone or video/web conferencing. Members are encouraged to use the ‘Find a Supervisor’ advanced search directory on the AASW website to locate a potential supervisor.
 

To be awarded with an Accredited Member status, a total of 30 hours of CPD must be completed. Of these 30 hours:

• 10 hours must be attained from Category 1 (Reflection, Ethical Practice and Career Development) (this includes developing a CPD plan and undertaking supervision).
• 10 hours must be attained from Category 2 (Skills and Knowledge).
• The remaining 10 hours can be attained from any type(s) of categories.
 

To be awarded with an Advanced Accredited Member status, a total of 50 hours of CPD must be completed. Of these 50 hours:

• 10 hours must be attained from Category 1 (Reflection, Ethical Practice and Career Development) (this includes developing a CPD plan and undertaking supervision).
• 10 hours must be attained from Category 2 (Skills and Knowledge).
• 10 hours must be attained from Category 3 (Professional Identity).
• The remaining 20 hours can be attained from any type(s) of categories.
 

To be accredited as a Mental Health Social Worker status, a total of 50 hours of CPD must be completed. Of these 50 hours:

• 10 hours must be attained from Category 1 (Reflection, Ethical Practice and Career Development) (this includes developing a CPD plan and undertaking supervision).
• 10 hours must be attained from Category 2 (Skills and Knowledge).
• 10 hours must be attained from Category 3 (Professional Identity).
• The remaining 20 hours can be attained from any type(s) of categories.
• It is important to note that Mental Health Social Workers are required to complete 20 hours relevant to Mental Health Practice and 30 hours relevant to Focused Psychological Strategies.
 
 

CPD Activities

CPD is divided into three categories:

Category 1: Reflection, Ethical Practice and Career Development.
• Practice group discussions and case studies.
• Mentoring and coaching.
• Workplace.
• Peer support/consultation.
• Developing a CPD plan.
• Reviewing professional and ethical standards.
• Maintaining a reflective journal.
 

Category 2: Skills and Knowledge.
• Workshops, symposiums, seminars, presentations, conferences.
• Study tours, skills training package, practice groups.
• Reading publications, academic study, research.
• Online training, self directed learning, Case discussion.
 

Category 3: Professional Identity.
• Presenting/promoting a social work perspective.
• Contributing to the learning of other social workers, contributing to public dialogue and advocacy.
• Participating in World Social Work Day activities.
• Contributing to policy and research.
• Attending AASW activities.
• Providing supervision, mentoring or support to social workers.
• Membership of AASW Group, Committee or Board.
• Attending a professionally relevant network.
• Contributing to publications.
• Practice group, presenting at a conference, seminar or similar event.
• Volunteering within the community.
 

CPD Documentation

To record a professional development activity towards a CPD goal, members are required to ensure the activity is relevant to them and consistent with the categories defined above. A record of professional development activities should be kept in ‘My CPD Record’ in a Social Workers Member Account on the AASW website (member log-in required).
